How The Game Of Golf Is Reaching A New Audience Through Municipal Golf Courses

Municipal golf courses can offer you a wonderful chance to get involved with a game which has always been, and still largely is, seen as elitist. They are found in many different areas and cities, and the courses can compare with some of the best in the country. There is even one municipal course, Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York, on the list of America's top ten public golf courses published by Golf Digest Magazine. The word “public” here simply refers to the fact that the course is open to anyone, and does not imply public ownership.

If you are lucky enough to live near a good municipal golf course, you can take part in a game which for a long time was denied to large sections of the population. Even now, there are a great many courses owned by private clubs which are not open to the public, and to which you need to have an invite in order to join. The public golf courses are open to everyone, but the fees charged and the distance you may have to travel will be prohibitive to some.

Municipal golf courses are a great place to start if you are looking to play golf for the first time, as you will not be under constant scrutiny from players with far more experience. You will also have access to the facilities you need to begin practicing to improve your game. There are driving ranges and practice areas at all major municipal courses, as well as smaller nine hole par three courses and putting greens. Every player will benefit enormously from having a professional look at their swing every now and again, but to have this happen regularly is obviously outside the budget of most of the people who use municipal courses. It is best to get some professional help, even if it is extremely occasional, but failing this it is a good idea to ask another competent player to give you some swing feedback. If you are teaching a young person to play golf, getting some professional advice at the start is crucial, as you don't want your child grooving faults by practicing bad habits.

There is now a growing opinion amongst many people in golf that the game needs to be opened up to a wider audience, even though crowds and interest remain healthy. Municipal courses have a big part to play in this, as they can offer a chance to play to so many more people. It is not just about helping anyone with great ability to have a shot at becoming a professional, although that is extremely important, it is about making the game available to anyone who will derive benefit and satisfaction from it.
