How To Derive The Greatest Benefit From A Paper Or Electronic Scorecard

A golf course scorecard is needed to keep track of how many strokes you have taken for your round. In tournament play, this is obviously essential, but it is something you will want to do anyway in order to gauge your progress. If you are just playing a practice round by yourself, no-one will know if you don't keep score accurately, but in the end you will be fooling nobody but yourself. If you are serious about improving, you will want to keep track of more than just the number of strokes per hole. Scorecards have been with us since golf began, but there are some today which are very different from any seen in the past.

Scoring is critical in golf, and tournament play has incredibly strict rules about keeping score correctly. If you are in error even by one stroke, they don't just penalize you that stroke, or even that stroke with one or two extra as a penalty, they disqualify you from the tournament. Some of the highest paid professionals in the game have been disqualified from tournaments which they were leading, purely because of a written error on their scorecards.

In your own practice rounds, you will benefit by keeping more than just the simple score of how many strokes you have taken to complete each hole. If you record statistics such as the number of greens you hit in regulation, the number of strokes you take once you have reached the green, the number of times you enter a bunker and the strokes you take to get out, you will begin to develop a clearer picture of the areas of your game you need to be working on most.

Scorecards have been a part of golf for over a century, since the game first appeared in Scotland. After all, if no score was kept, the game is pretty much an irrelevance and is played purely for show. Scorecards have changed little through the years, and they are still typically marked in pencil. Now, though, there is a new breed of scorecard which is completely different. These are electronic scorecards, and they are extremely sophisticated.

A modern golf course scorecard can not only make it easier for you to keep score, and to let you know how long you have taken over a round, but it can provide services way beyond the capability of a paper scorecard. You can find maps of hundreds of courses which are open for the public to play, and the maps are surprisingly detailed. You can scroll in and out to see individual features, and you can make notes if there is anything you need to remember for your next practice session. These tools are more than just gimmicks for the technological show-off, you really can play better golf thanks to your golf course scorecard.
