How A Golf Course Map Can Help You Plan Your Round

A golf course map can give you an overview of a course which you are about to play for the first time. Although it is always preferable to walk any course that you intend to play, so that you can see for yourself exactly how you will need to shape your shots and manage the course, in the modern world it is not always possible to spare the time to do so. A map of the course will at least help you determine how many tee shots will need to be faded and how many drawn, and it will also help you select the clubs you need to include in your bag.

Being able to calculate the likely distance of any intermediate shot or shot into the green is of great importance as well, and a good golf course map will allow you to do this. If you are considering whether to add an extra long iron and leave out one of the wedges, for example, the map can help you decide whether or not this is a good idea. You will be able to calculate how many strokes will need to be played within a certain range, always assuming that you hit your tee shot cleanly.

The only thing a golf course map will not be able to show you is the nature of the surface and the terrain you will be facing. You will need to physically walk the course to gauge how long or short the grass may be off the fairways, and also how the grass has been cut. This could influence, for example, any choice you have to make about carrying a long iron or a lofted wood. Although walking the course is preferable, you will be able to get a good idea simply by studying a part of the course and then using the map as a reference.

Modern technology has enhanced so many aspects of our lives, and it is no surprise that it has enhanced golfing maps as well. It is now possible to get hold of hand held electronic scorecards which incorporate maps of literally thousands of well known public courses. Not only does this make the job of keeping score so much easier, it also saves a lot of time when it comes to planning a round. Even in a place you have never played before, you will have enough rudimentary knowledge to plan the basic of how you approach the course.

At the other end of the scale are the antique golf course maps which are now collector items. The history of golf, especially in Scotland, goes back a very long way, and rare maps of historic courses can change hands for a lot of money. There is a huge amount of interest in golf, and many of the people who play it and follow it are in a high income bracket. It is easy to see why you can see high prices being realized for a golf course map.
